BRIEF BACKGROUND.
Steven Kitshoff was born on 10 February 1992 in Somerset West, South Africa. He was raised alongside his younger brother Ruben and ventured into rugby at an early age. He attended Hendrik Louw Primary School and later joined Paul Roos Gymnasium, where he pursued his passion for rugby. He got married in December 2018 to his wife Aimee. His parents are Steven Sr and Poppie.
CAREER.
He first broke through during the 2011 season making five substitute appearances for the Stormers while he was still a teenager. Kitshoff was one of the standouts for the South Africa U-20 team that won the 2012 Junior World Championship title. He nailed down the number 1 jersey for both the Stormers and Western Province. In the 2013 Super Rugby season, Steven Kitshoff was outstanding and he went on to play in the Currie Cup where he was an ever-present as Province reached a second consecutive Currie Cup final.
In 2014 he succumbed to a season-ending injury towards the back-end of the Super Rugby season and this ruled him out of Western Province’s successful Currie Cup campaign in which they emerged champions for the second time in three years with a narrow win over the Golden Lions.
Steven Kitshoff decided to sign with top French club Bordeaux in February 2015 at the conclusion of the Currie Cup that season. This was after his impressive performances at Super Rugby level were overlooked by the Springboks. Steven Kitshoff gained invaluable experience while competing in the Top 14 and was eventually drafted into the Bok squad in 2016. He won his first Test cap in the final match of the series against Ireland.
He spent two seasons in France before returning to Cape Town in 2017. He was named captain of the Storners in 2021, and led the team as they won the inaugural United Rugby Championship in 2022. He then signed for Ulster ahead of the 2023–24 season.
RWC 2019 and 2023.
Kitshoff was named in South Africa’s squad for the 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cup and south Africa won the tournaments. Although Tendai Mtawarira and Steven Kitshoff competed fiercely for the No 1 jersey for much of the 2019 Rugby World Cup cycle, they also set out to become the best “loosehead combination” in the world.
Steven Kitshoff has been released from Ulster and he has signed with the DHL Stormers.
