BRIEF BACKGROUND.
The Springbok rugby player Kwagga Smith was born on 11 June 1993 in Lydenburg, Mpumalanga, South Africa, to Marie and Willie Smith. His full name is Albertus Stephanus Smith. His elder brother gave him the nickname Kwagga meaning zebra when he was still young. The Springbok player weighs 100 kilograms and is 180 centimeters tall. Kwagga is married to Ilke de Haas. The duo started dating in April 2011 and they tied the knot on 16 December 2017 in Bordeaux Game Farm, Marnitz, South Africa. His wife is a marathoner.
He grew up on his grandparents’ farm, thus he spent most of his childhood with his grandparents. Albertus Stephanus Smith attended Hoër Tegniese Skool Middelburg in Mpumalanga, where he played rugby, and was later included in the Pumas U18 team, which participated in the 2010 and 2011 Craven Week competitions.
EDUCATION AND CAREER.
After school, he joined the Golden Lions in Johannesburg. He participated in the 2012 Under-19 Provincial Championship at the club and scored four tries. Kwagga was also among the South Africa Under-20 team at the 2013 IRB Junior World Championship in France. He made ten appearances for the Golden Lions U21 side in the 2013 Under-21 Provincial Championship, scoring four tries. He also played for the same team in the 2014 Under-21 Provincial Championship.
He then joined the South African Sevens team. At the end of 2013, he made his debut on the international IRB Sevens World Series circuit during the 2013 South African Sevens.
In 2014, Kwagga was a Currie Cup Premier Division member and was in the Golden Lions starting line-up. In 2016, he was part of the 12-man squad for the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics. The legendary player signed with Japan’s Yamaha Jubilo in 2018 to play in their Top League during the 2018/19 campaign. he was part of the South African Seven squad that won the bronze and gold medals in the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups, respectively.
Kwagga played for South Africa in the tests against the British and Irish Lions and Georgia. He also featured in the 2021 Rugby Championship and 2021 Autumn Nations Series, as a flanker and also number 8.
Currently, the Springbok rugby player plays as a flanker for Shizuoka Blue Revs (Yamaha Júbilo) in Japan. He joined the club in July 2018. He was also in the 2023 RWC Springboks squad.
