BRIEF BACKGROUND.
Damian Willemse is a South African-based professional rugby union player for the South African national team and the Stormers in the United Rugby Championship and Western Province in the Currie Cup. Damian Willemse was born on 7 May 1998 in Strand, Western Cape, South Africa. The rugby champion was born to Charlotte and Francois and raised by his grandmother alongside his brother, Ramone Samuels, who is also a rugby player for the Stormers and the Western Province as a flanker. His grandmother died in 2021.
CAREER
He attended Paul Roos Gymnasium, a school in Stellenbosch. This is where he started playing rugby and he got selected to play for the Western Province Under-16 in 2014 Grant Khomo Week. Willemse got selected again for the Under-18 Western Province squad that played in the Craven Week tournament of 2015. There after he was included in the South Africa Schools squad for the Under-18 International Series.
2016
In 2016, Damian was selected for the Western Province Craven Week side for the tournament in Durban. He started all three matches and scored two tries in their first match against Boland. He helped the team to a 27–20 win in the final game against the Golden Lions and he got selected for the South Africa schools for the second time. Willemse also appeared for the Western Province U19 team in the 2016 Under-19 Provincial Championship.
2017 -2019
Willemse joined the Stormers squad for the Super Rugby season in 2017 and was included in a matchday squad for their round three match against the Southern Kings, where he made his Super Rugby debut. He played for the Stormers until 2019 and from there he signed a three -month contract with the Sarens to provide injury cover for players who had suffered injuries; Alex Goode and Max Malins. Willemse made his debut for the club in the Premiership Cup against Wasps.
2019 TO NOW.
Damian Willemse won the United Rugby Championship, with the Stormers beating the Bulls in the finals in June 2022. He then signed a 5- year deal with the club in October 2022. At a tender age, he was also part of the Springboks squad that represented south Africa in the 2019 and 2023 RWC tournament.

Damian Willemse has worked to make an environmental and social impact in South Africa, while also supporting the global reforestation movement to address climate change through nature-based solutions by partnering with the non-profit, One Tree Planted and sponsors such as, Vida e Caffe and Adidas. Willemse, along with teammate, Siya Kolisi, is also a global ambassador for Adidas’ Run for the Oceans campaign.
