Astronomy is a branch of science that deals with space, celestial objects and the physical universe as a whole. It is the study of everything that is beyond the earth’s atmosphere. People who are trained to command, pilot and travel in space are called ASTRONAUTS.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT SUBJECTS IN HIGH SCHOOL.
The high school education or basic education is the foundation for every career. So many kids are fond of becoming astronauts as most of the staff they watch as they grow up is sci-fi and involves astronomy. Therefore, if you are one of those who dream of becoming astronauts it is recommended that you focus on STEM subjects. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Passing these subjects will grant you access to study a degree of your choice that is in line with your dream. English is also an essential subject.
BACHELOR’S DEGREE
Right after school you are required to pursue a bachelor’s degree in a STEM related field. Degrees that are considered to be relevant to a career as an astronaut include computer science, chemistry, biology, physics, geology, and mechanical, electrical and aerospace engineering. This usually takes four years.
ADVANCED DEGREE.
It is recommended to take an advanced degree such as a masters or PhD. Additional education can be an added advantage when you apply to any space agencies as it makes you more competent. Advanced degrees demonstrate a high level of expertise and competence.
EXPERIENCE.
You should get experience in your field of study before you apply to become an astronaut. This may take you a couple of years.
ASTRONAUT TRAINING.
After gaining some experience, you can then apply to a space agency such as NASA. Take note that specific requirements may differ from one agency to another and that also determines how long the process will take for you. You should keep in mind that the process is highly competitive and it involves a scrupulous screening that can take several months if not years. I guess, on a personal level, patience and a lot of hard work as well as commitment is required for you to get there.
Keep in mind that being an astronaut can be quite demanding both physically and, mentally and requires a high level of discipline and focus. One has to be healthy and physically fit in order to function properly and effectively as an astronaut.
