BRIEF BACKGROUND.

Marco Van Staden was born on August 25th, 1995, in Krugersdorp, South Africa, and is among the fastest-rising rugby players in the South African Rugby Union. He weighs 106 kilograms and stands at 184 centimeters. Staden attended Hoërskool Bekker, an agricultural boarding school, before joining the University of Pretoria. The South African rugby player is married to Chanel Van Staden. The couple got engagement in May 2020 and tied the knot in January 2021. The lovebirds are parents to one son as of February 2024.

CAREER.

After high school, Van Staden joined the Limpopo Blue Bulls Under-19 team and played in the 2015 Vodacom Cup. He joined the Under-21 team and played at the Currie Cup before joining the UP Tuks. In 2016, he played at the Varsity Cup with the Tuks, helping them win the title. In 2018, he joined the Bulls 2018 Super Rugby Squad and he served as a substitute in the opening round against the Hurricanes.  Van Staden made his international debut for the Springboks on 18 August 2018 as a replacement against Argentina.

The 28-year-old has gained popularity for his versatility on the pitch. He started his career as a front-row forward but transitioned into a loose forward, a position he has mastered over the years. Van Staden joined Leicester Tigers in the 2021/2022 season and played in Premiership Rugby, England’s most prominent local tier. After he made eight appearances with the team,he then joined the Springboks in 2019. Staden returned to the Bulls in 2022 and they the Web Ellis Cup the following year. He joined the Blue Bulls in 2023.

HONORS.

Marco’s debut with the Springboks was in 2018 during a match against Argentina. Eskom participated in all 16 matches for the Bulls during his debut Super Rugby season. Marco was named one of the three uncapped players in the Springboks squad for the 2018 Rugby Championship. The rugby player earned his first Blue Bulls cap, and became a regular starter throughout the 2018 season. He was named in South Africa’s 46-man squad for the British and Irish Lions Tour in June 2021. Van Staden is the first player in South African rugby history to play for a university, franchise, and national team in a year. He won the Gallagher Premiership Winner in the 2020/2021 season.
