ENGINEERING.

The cruise ship Engineering Department consists of the people that operate and maintain the engines and machinery that is onboard. The Chief Engineer directs the department and he or she is responsible for the electrical, engineering, and mechanical sections of the ship, as well as all of the personnel that assist in those tasks. Engineering section positions require specialized training and experience in the systems involved. You may be required to be a graduate of a maritime school, have certification, and have time in a subordinate position while working on those systems thus gaining a little bit of experience.

Some ships offer entry level positions such as an engine utility man, an oiler, and a wiper. They may require some mechanical knowledge or experience. The Department operates and maintains the engines, steering, and power systems on the ship. All other supporting systems onboard: installing, troubleshooting, and repairing them is also the responsibility of the engine department. Besides these systems, they also service the heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, lighting and ventilation.

CARPENTERS.

Are also known as joiners, Boat fitters or shipwrights. Carpenters are responsible for building, maintaining, repairing and replacing all of the wood components. Usually, they will often work with fiberglass and aluminum, too. Carpentry is an entry-level position, but you are to have strong carpentry skills and experience as well as a High School Diploma. Completing an Apprenticeship may give you an advantage. To add on, you must be physically fit, be able to read blueprints, have good English, and have some math skills.
