Housekeeping is all about keeping and maintaining cleanliness, neatness and tidiness on a cruise ship. All places are to be kept in order for an unforgettable experience for the guests. Laundry is also part of housekeeping. There are also levels in this department and they have different requirements. Let’s explore!

Chief Steward /Housekeepers

The Chief Steward/Housekeeper position is the lead position in the Housekeeping Department on a cruise ship. They hire and fire, lead and supervise over the entire housekeeping staff. Chief Stewards manage the staff, order supplies and deliver proper training for the housekeeping department.

A Degree in Business Administration or Hotel Management is a requirement. You need a minimum of three years of managing a housekeeping department. Good communication skills and the ability to speak English well as well as being computer literate are all qualities you ought to have. Additional languages are an added advantage.

Chief Cabin Stewards/ Head Room Stewards

The Chief Cabin Steward works with the Chief Steward/Housekeeper and help to train the cabin stewards. He/she is responsible for checking on the various cabin stewards to ensure that the quality of work is up to standard.

A High School Diploma, experience in management and at least two or three years of working in a hotel or ship are the qualifications required for this position. Good English is a necessity. Other languages are an added advantage. It is possible to be promoted through the ranks.

Cabin Stewards/Stateroom Attendants/Hotel Stewards/Cabin Attendant

Cabin Attendants with other housekeeping staff, are responsible for keeping the public areas and staterooms sparkling clean and tidy. They make sure the bedding is clean and arranged and perform room service. They instruct passengers on how to use appliances in their rooms and explain emergency procedures. Duties and responsibilities may differ from one ship to another.

Requirements for the position include a High School Diploma and at least one year of experience in working with hotels. You should be able to speak good English, and other languages may be required.

Laundry Supervisor/ Assistant Laundry Supervisor / Laundry Man/ Linen Keeper

The Laundry Staff keeps the linens and uniforms of the ship’s crew looking clean. They provide laundry services for the passengers, the officers, and the crew. They collect dirty laundry from various parts of the ship, clean them and provide dry cleaning for the staff.

Working in the laundry department as Laundry Staff is an entry level job. No experience or educational level is required. There is a possibility of getting a promotion to next level.

Bellman/ Bellhop/Bell person/Bell Staff/ Room Service Attendant 

Bell staff help passengers get to their rooms with their luggage, and ensure that passengers onboard get what they need. They work directly with guests and provide basic services like moving luggage, providing information and directions, escorting guests to their rooms, delivering messages and orders for room service and run errands.

This is an entry level position that requires you to be able to speak and write English, physical strength to carry heavy things, and a High School Diploma.

GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING JOB REQUIREMENTS.

  • Fluency in spoken English for communication with guests
  • At least 0-3 years of experience in a similar role.
  • Customer service experience.
  • You must pass a Seafarers Medical Fitness Examination and be able to lift up a certain number of kilograms unassisted.
  • You should be willing to learn and be friendly.

Job responsibilities:

  • Maintenance and cleaning of public areas, open decks, crew areas and offices.
  • Ensure staff/officer uniforms and promptly delivered and accounted 
  • Report all repairs to be made in assigned section 
  • Correct usage, storage and labelling of all chemicals and other applicable equipment and cleaning machinery. 
  • Adhere to the company’s standards regarding dress and appearance 
  • Extend appropriate greeting to all guests  
  • Advise any guest challenges immediately to Housekeeping Management. 
  • Follow all safety regulations during the course of duty  
  • Assist with luggage delivery and related duties as instructed.  
  • Follow Time and Attendance policy.
