It’s becoming a norm for school teachers to send their students out to ask for donations in the name of fundraising. This usually happens in primary schools.

Well, it is understandable that some schools do not have enough funding to carry out certain activities especially government schools. This forces teachers to send kids with donation forms into the streets, well, at home but they end up begging in the streets.

These kids will literally beg whoever they meet for these donations. You would find that there talented students who cannot go far in their field because the school cannot afford.

I’m sure school would be boring if we focus only on books and no extra curriculum activities. There are kids who are not academically gifted but are extraordinary in sport.

All they need is a solid foundation and exposure at that tender age and they can make a career out of their talents. So, we cannot say teachers are doing bad for sending kids out to beg.

They have good intentions. Moreover most of the parents with kids in such schools may not afford to just give money to support the school. Some are just not willing to.  They prefer the idea of donations.

However, this has created a bad norm in most kids. They now see nothing wrong with begging. They grown to become very comfortable with asking for money from strangers.

If you walk around after school hours in South Africa, you will come across a number of small kids who will ask you for money. They see you buying something and you getting your change, then they ask for one or  two Rands.

They actually stand by the store doors and beg for money and that norm came from the idea of sending kids to ask for donations. Some parents never allow their kids to do that because they know the end result.

We have a lot of kids who have dropped out of school and they think life is easy. They prefer being on the streets begging to bring at school. The worst part is that there are some parents who actually support that.

We have grown up people who still do that. They are able bodied but they don’t want to work at all. The mind is on begging or stealing something and sell it on a cheap price to get money for whatever they want.

I think it is better to give your child the needed amount  instead of allowing them to beg. If you can’t tame your child now then you will never be able to. You will be ruining his or her life and creating a threat to the community in the near future.
