On the 12th of October 2024, the South African former Finance Minister died. He was the first black man to be the governor of the central bank of South and he seemed to have a very good reputation.

The late former minister was one of the anti-apartheid activists who worked hard for the freedom of South Africans. He was born on 16 March 1959 and he died at the age of sixty five.

It has been reported that he died in a hospital in Johannesburg after a very short illness that was not specified. This is a great loss for the nation of South Africa and Africa at large.

Dr Mboweni spend almost a decade in exile during the apartheid era and he did his studies in exile. He had his first degree in Lesotho and then his masters in the United Kingdom.

He said he lived in many countries and he hated narrow nationalism which made him hate xenophobia. Tito Mboweni said,

“I suppose you can call me an exile kid, and international kid born in South Africa. But my home is in South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique, the United Kingdom, Zambia, Angola, Tanzania, Swaziland, the USA, Switzerland, and everywhere I stayed in my youth. I hate narrow nationalism – I cannot stand it. I hate xenophobia.”

Mboweni worked as a labour minister under Nelson Mandela after he returned from exile. He helped in the making and reconstructing of labour law during that time.

He then worked as a governor for a decade in the Reserve Bank of South Africa and he did well in stabilising the economy and keeping inflation under control.

South Africa will surely miss his humorous posts of cooking and recipes.

May his soul rest in peace.
